Uploading your menu
The four ways to get your menu in — photo, PDF, pasted text or a link — and what to do if a file won't upload.
Menus
Your menu is what every quiz is built from, so this is the one thing worth getting right. There are four ways to add it, and you can mix them — use whichever is easiest.
The four ways
- Snap a photo — the quickest option. Photograph each page with your phone and upload. Big photos are fine; we shrink them automatically before sending.
- Upload a PDF or image — ideal if you already have a designed menu file.
- Paste the text — the most reliable option of all. If your menu lives in a Word doc or on your website, copying the text in always works.
- Paste a link — point us at your menu page or a direct link to a PDF or image, and we'll fetch it for you.
Pasting the text is the most accurate method, because there's no photo for the AI to read. If a menu ever comes out wrong, try this first.
Getting a good photo
- Lay the menu flat and shoot straight down, not at an angle.
- Good, even light — avoid shadows and glare from a flash on glossy paper.
- One page per photo, filling the frame. Don't try to fit a whole folded menu into one shot.
- Make sure the small print is readable when you zoom in on your own phone. If you can't read it, neither can the AI.
Food and Beverage menus
When you add a menu you choose whether it's a Food or a Beverage/Wine menu. This matters: marking your drinks list as Beverage is what powers the Wine & Beverage training quizzes on the Pro plan.
You can keep several menus side by side — for example a food menu, a wine list and a specials board. Quizzes draw from all of your active menus together.
If a file won't upload
Photos are shrunk automatically, so they'll go through whatever size they are. PDFs can't be shrunk in your browser, so a PDF has to be under 4 MB. That's a limit of the hosting platform, not a limit we chose — the upload is stopped before it ever reaches us, which is why we check it up front rather than letting you wait and then fail.
If your PDF is too big, any of these will work:
- Paste a link to the menu instead — links are fetched by our server, so the size limit doesn't apply.
- Copy the text out of the PDF and paste it in. This is the most reliable route and takes a few seconds.
- Screenshot or photograph the pages and upload those instead — images get shrunk automatically.
- Re-export or compress the PDF at a smaller size, then upload it.
Uploading several files at once? The 4 MB limit applies to everything in one go, not per file — so if you're adding a lot of pages, add them a few at a time.
When your menu changes
Update the menu — paste the new one or snap a fresh photo — and the next quiz is built from it automatically. Seasonal menus, specials and new drinks lists stay covered without any extra work.
